The project partner of this cooperation Borkenstein & Borkenstein is a medical practice, which is highly specialized on cataract surgeries. In this operation, the intraocular lens (IOL) replaces the natural eye lens while the lens sheath remains. Months or years after this surgery the after-cataract can occur usually due to thickening of the back or posterior capsule. To restore the eyesight, a small part of the capsule is cut with the help of YAG laser to clear the optical axis. Unfortunately, the laser can also damage the IOL, so call laser shots or YAG pits can be created which reduces the vision.
The aim of this cooperation was to get deeper insides about the formation and the microstructure of these defects. Based on this knowledge future IOL material innovations and surgical techniques should reduce the incidence and the severity of YAG laser pits.
