Antiferroelectric materials and the design of field-induced phase transitions for high-energy storage capacitors and tunable dielectrics
Abstract:
Antiferroelectrics exhibit a large potential for the use in various electronic devices due to their high energy-storage density (capacitors), field-dependent permittivity (tunable dielectrics), inverse electrocaloric effect (solid-state coolers), and multiple non-volatile states (neuromorphic computing). These unique properties are related to the antiparallel orientation of the polarization and the electric-field-induced phase transition between antiferroelectric and ferroelectric states. However, despite the large demand, only a handful of compositions with reversible antiferroelectric behavior at ambient conditions have been discovered so far. This talk will introduce the fundamental physics of antiferroelectrics, give examples of material design, and discuss the remaining open questions in the field.
